Effective April 3rd, 2013 the Indian Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEIT) issued the Compulsory Registration Order 2012. Certain products are now required to comply with Indian safety standards and obtain BIS Registration for electronic products before they can be imported, distributed or sold into India.

The products covered under the notification are Laptops, Tablets; TVs and Monitors with large screen size; Amplifiers, DVD Players and Music Systems of high capacities, Printers, Scanners, Plotters, Telephone Answering Machines, Automatic Data Processing Machines largely covering Servers and Storage Devices (Total 15 items). Bureau of Indian Standards Rules includes the following products to the Schedule of the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012, namely:
BIS Registration is essential for all the electronic products which are listed in Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) and get to be sold in India. Process of BIS Registration is divided in two steps:
Step-1: Firstly, the sample of product is to be given to “BIS Approved Indian Laboratory” for testing under defined IS Standard.
Step-2: Secondly, after getting the test report, apply to BIS Office with prescribed filled-up Form VI attached with lab test report, factory documents, information & undertaking. After scrutiny of all submitted documents & information, BIS Registration Certificate will be issued.
